This art project is all about learning to apply the elements of art to create a work of art while listening and following directions. We review math related vocabulary like angle, parallel, vertical, horizontal, etc... The students really enjoyed seeing the bird appear on the paper as we were drawing. They will soon learn color application technique for their artwork.

The students were shown two works of art by Delaunay. Delaunay was famous for her geometric abstractions with circular shapes. The students worked in groups to compare and contrast the two works of art using both geometry vocabulary and art vocabulary. We used the Venn Diagram for this activity, which ironically is made of overlapping circles! After their close examination of these paintings, they shared with the class their findings, and then we all started to create our own geometric abstractions inspired by Sonia Delaunay.
My third graders are exploring intricate patterns, and learning about the element space in their landscape drawings. The students learned about foreground, middle ground, and background, and also, perspective. Stay tuned for the finished products...
